History of town

Kiskunmajsa is a town in the southern part of the Great Plain, 160 km from Budapest.

The Turkish have burnt the predecessor of Kiskunmajsa at the beginning of the 16th century, namely, Mayossaszállás, situated to south-east direction from the town. Following the chase-out of the Turks, the court sold Hármaskerület, earlier having enjoyed noble privileges (Jászság, Kiskunság, Nagykunság) to the German Order of Knighthood and the new owner populated the earlier unpopulated “puszta” (plain land). The population of Majsa moved first to Üllés puszta located next to Kiskundorozsma (the new settlers mainly arrived from Jászfényszaru) and hoping for buying land freely, they settled later from here to Kiskunmajsa, in the summer of 1743. By the end of the 19th century, the population transferring from animal farming to agriculture has overpopulated and the soil was not able to feed them while neither grape and fruit culture could be established on this sandy soil. Between the two world wars poverty became huge, many have fled and this process continued in the fifties, as well.

Today, there are about twelve thousand people living in this town. The settlement form so typical of the towns of Great Plain has developed together with the surrounding towns and has become a European small town.
